Sotheby’s Spotlight: The Pilara Foundation Collection: Dorothea Lange and Katy Grannan

New York | 1 - 2 May

Sotheby’s Global Head of Photographs, Emily Bierman, highlights two artists from the Pilara Family Foundation Collection, Dorothea Lange and Katy Grannan. Lange’s work comes out of a period of American history filled with hardship, struggle, but also perseverance, and these traits are most notably captured in the iconic portrait, Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California. With her Boulevard series, Grannan continues the lineage of portrait photography, using her camera as a vehicle for dynamic expression and social inquiry by focusing on an overlooked cross-section of American society.

Pier 24 Photography from the Pilara Family Foundation Sold to Benefit Charitable Organizations will be offered at Sotheby’s New York across a series of single-owner sales throughout 2023, beginning on 1 & 2 May.
