O pened to the public in 2010, Pier 24 Photography is the home of the Pilara Family Foundation Collection and is one of the largest spaces in the world devoted to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting photography. In July 2025, the Pilara Family Foundation will pivot its philanthropic focus by transitioning to a granting foundation.

A series of auctions, Pier 24 Photography from the Pilara Family Foundation Sold to Benefit Charitable Organizations began with two highly successful single-owner auctions on 1 and 2 May 2023, showcasing masterworks by Richard Avedon, Dorothea Lange, Robert Frank, Robert Adams, and more. The auctions continued with an online sale dedicated to the vernacular, followed by a live sale on October 25th. Finally, this December, Sotheby’s will present a final online auction featuring works by Garry Winogrand, Lewis Baltz, Edward Burtynsky, Lee Friedlander, Stephen Shore, Berenice Abbott, Ray K. Metzker, and more. One of the most significant collections of photographs to ever come to auction, all auction proceeds from the Pilara Family Foundation will support organizations devoted to healthcare research, education, and the arts.
