John Chamberlain turned crushed automobile parts into sculpture — and Sotheby's presents The Energy of Form, a private-sale exhibition drawn from the works he kept for himself.
Nineteen pieces span three decades of his practice: floor and tabletop sculptures welded by hand from scrap metal, the abstract photographs he made by moving the camera as he shot, and two of the rare masks he cast from found metal — fewer than thirty in all. Among the works is the black-and-white sculpture Cupcake Cutie, held until now in the artist's personal collection. Presented by the John Chamberlain Estate and its director, Alexandra Fairweather, the exhibition arrives as the artist's centennial approaches.
