Of Indian and Hungarian descent, Amrita Sher-Gil is considered to be one of India’s most celebrated and gifted artists of the pre-colonial era. While much has been written about her output during her short life, specific pieces from her Hungarian period – such as ‘In the Garden’ – are lesser known. In this video, Sher-Gil’s nephew recalls the artist’s happy moments in Zebegny, Hungary where her mother’s family lived. ‘In the Garden’ leads Sotheby’s Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art sale on 15 March in New York.
