Beyond the Brushstroke: The Sam and Marilyn Fox Collection

New York | November 2025 – January 2026

What do French painter Claude Monet and American Impressionist Childe Hassam have in common? Both are united in the visionary Sam and Marilyn Fox Collection — a remarkable testament to a lifetime of passion, philanthropy, and an enduring love of art.

Led by Monet’s Un Parc à Pourville and Hassam’s Newport, October Sundown, highlights from the collection will be offered in Sotheby’s Modern Evening Auction on November 20, with additional works by Hassam, Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, Camille Pissarro, and others presented in the Modern Day Auction on November 21.

Together, these masterworks trace a dialogue between French and American Impressionism, revealing how artists on both sides of the Atlantic captured the light, color, and rhythm of modern life.

Beyond their art, Sam and Marilyn Fox were celebrated civic leaders and philanthropists whose generosity shaped the cultural landscape of St. Louis and beyond. From the St. Louis Art Museum and Washington University to the Missouri Botanical Garden, their legacy reflects a deep commitment to community, creativity, and beauty.

Important works from the Fox Collection will feature across Sotheby’s upcoming sales — including Modern Art in November 2025, High Jewels in December 2025, and Visions of America in January 2026.
