Created by Benjamin Millepied and Solenne du Haÿs Mascré, the Paris Dance Project is an artistic and social project to support choreographic talents and bring dance to all.
'The gesture is the direct agent of the heart' said François Delsarte, a 19th century thinker who influenced the birth of modern dance. More than ever, this phrase is relevant. The movement is the living architecture of the body and soul. The art of composing movement – this what we call choreography – This is invisible making of the ephemeral. Paris Dance Project wishes share this artisanal experience of the gesture and allow as many people as possible to approach the secret of choreography.
Dancers Caroline Osmont and Loup Marcault, from the Opéra de Paris, created a choreography in response to 4 artworks presented in the Modernités auction. Titled Territoire aux deux promeneurs, after Jean Dubuffet, this performance was conceived as the journey of a viewer exposed to these paintings, bringing to the flesh their singularity and power. 'As if these canvases from scattered universes gave birth to our choreography, a new canvas in motion, enriched and nourished by the inspirations of these painters' explained Caroline and Loup.
Sotheby’s is thrilled to share this original choreography created and filmed under the artistic direction of Benjamin Millepied.
