In a year that marks Sotheby’s 50th anniversary in Asia, Sotheby’s marquee Autumn series in Hong Kong attracted a near 70% increase in visitors from last season to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre with two major collections that anchored the season including A Long Journey: A Selection from the Liu Yiqian and Wang Wei Collection, the highest value single owner sale ever staged in Asia. A number of Western works set new records for the artist in the region, with the majority of those being acquired by Asian collectors. Top lot of the season, Amedeo Modigliani’s Paulette Jourdain sold for HK$273M / US$35M and is now the most valuable Western Modern artist to be offered at auction in Asia. The Leshantang Collection - Treasures of Chinese Art from the Tsai I-Ming Collection, a group of masterpieces of Chinese art from porcelain to classical and modern paintings from one of the world’s most celebrated collectors in the golden era of Chinese art achieved with more than double its estimates at HK$217M / US$28M, near 95% of the lots were sold above high estimates. Among other highlights, Sotheby’s saw a particularly strong performance for Chinese Art, with its sale of Classical Chinese Paintings realising its second highest total ever in the company’s history.
In 2024, Sotheby’s will introduce a new sale calendar in Asia, which will allow for regular live and online auctions to take place throughout the year. These sales will take place in Sotheby’s new Maison, situated in the very centre of Hong Kong.
