Acquired directly from the artist by legendary dealer Durand-Ruel in Paris, this stunning pastel likely joined the collection of Charles L. Hutchinson, founder of the Art Institute of Chicago, by 1920. As far as is known, Profil de femme sur fond bleu has not been seen publicly since, having only recently surfaced in a private collection in California.

Federico Zandomeneghi, Le Lever: femme s'étirant. Oil on canvas. Estimate $400,000–600,000. Offered in the Impressionist & Modern Art Day Sale, 13 November 2018.

Once owned by Angelo Sommaruga, the Italian dealer with a gallery in Paris who was a devoted supporter and collector of Impressionist artists including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Paul Cézanne, this extraordinary painting later joined a private Italian collection and was passed through the family. This exhibition represents the first time that Le Lever: femme s'étirant has been seen outside of Europe.

By 1941, the present work was acquired by Dr. Charles H. Strub, well-known for the impressive collection he assembled for the Los Angeles Turf Club at Santa Anita Park. Painted in 1894, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s jewel-like Past and Present Generations was acquired by Mrs. Selma Laufer, of New York City, in 1895. The painting was later exhibited with Asahi Art Co., Tokyo, but the location had remained untraced until it recently surfaced in an Important Private Collection in Mexico.
