On 13 July, Sotheby’s Los Angeles celebrated the S|2 exhibition Roy Newell: Works from the Archive with a compelling conversation between Art Agency Partners' Christy MacLear and contemporary artist Richard Dupont, a long-time friend of Newell. Entitled “Art History and The Cult of Personality,” the discussion delved into Newell’s complex history, from his Orthodox Jewish upbringing in New York City to his fraught friendship with Jackson Pollock and critical reception. Cocktails followed and guests explored the exhibition of nineteen paintings spanning Newell's brightly coloured geometric paintings to a series of powerful figural works. Click ahead for images of the engaging evening and the exhibition, on view through 4 August.
