Jean-Baptiste Pater, Fête galante: La Barque du Plaisir.
Estimate €150,000–200,000
This
“scène galante”
is clearly reminiscent of Watteau’s Embarkation for Cythera (1717). Pater was actually an heir of the master and, despite only spending three weeks with him, credits Watteau with teaching him almost everything he knew about art. Here, young people start boarding a vessel for a cruise on a lake but their undressed state and the decoration of the tent suggests their true intentions.
