Gem set and diamond demi-parure, 'Zip', 1950s, Van Cleef & Arpels.
Estimate: CHF 50,000 – 65,000 / US$ 50,000 – 70,000.

Invented in late 19th century America as a fastening for boots, the humble zipper seems far removed from the realm of sophistication. Yet despite its humble origins, it has inspired one of Van Cleef & Arpels’ most iconic pieces. The Zip necklace blends humour and refinement by re-appropriating an everyday object into a radically different context.

This astonishing feat in jewellery-making can be credited to the Duchess of Windsor. Circa 1938, she suggested to Renée Puissant - the Maison’s artistic director and daughter of Alfred Van Cleef - that she should create a piece based on the zip fastener. Crafted in round and baguette-cut diamonds mounted in platinum, the necklace was not produced until 1950. An outstanding technical achievement, it soon achieved iconic status.

Estimate: CHF 340,000 — 475,000 / US$335,000 – 495,000.

The emerald Corrigan bracelet, so named in the Mount Stewart archives, was noted for its central emerald of immense size that was understood to have been acquired by Cartier directly from an Indian Maharajah. Jacques Cartier, the brother who ran the London branch visited India the year of the Delhi Durbar in 1911, in part as a buying trip, where he purchased many antique Indian jewels that they later sold both as antique jewels.

Mrs. James Corrigan gifted this piece to the Marchioness of Londonderry, Mount Stewart, thence to present owner by family descent.

This 51.72 carat round brilliant-cut diamond is quite exceptional. When it comes to stones of significant size, diamond cutters will generally try to keep the maximum weight from the rough. For this reason, elongated cushions, emerald-cuts, and pear-shapes are usually more common for large diamonds. Here, however, the master craftsmen who cut the stones has chosen a round brilliant cut, which show off the diamond's exceptional physical characteristics to maximum effect. Find out more here.
