It was a week of faces and firsts. Leading the Evening Sales of Impressionist & Modern Art and Contemporary Art were portraits, each a unique masterwork representing the brilliance of their creators. These ranged from Marc Chagall’s lyrical depiction of himself with his wife to Francis Bacon’s dark and complex studies of his lover. The Bacon also made its auction debut, as did the 2001 Ferrari driven by racing legend Michael Schumacher, which inspired a bidding war. Those are just some of the exceptional works came under the hammer in this week’s Evening Sales, which totalled $579.9 million. Click ahead to see the top 20 lots.
