Sotheby’ s Fine Chinese Paintings Autumn Sale, comprising modern Chinese paintings and calligraphy works, brought a total of HK$267 million / US$34.4 million, with a sell-through rate of 93%.
We saw spirited bidding from collectors both in the region and overseas, for paintings with impeccable provenance, including a splashed ink-and-colour masterpiece by Zhang Daqian from the painter’s family collection, important works by Wu Guanzhong from the collection of Chu Teh-Chun, and Pu Ru’s White Peacock, and Qi Gong’s Bamboo Grove by The Rocks. Paintings and calligraphy from the collection of Tung Chiao performed well, with almost all of the lots finding buyers.
