Science and art meets ancient and natural history
Part of the National Museums Liverpool, this institution has extensive collections covering archaeology, ethnology and the natural and physical sciences. Special attractions include the Natural History Centre and the planetarium — the first in the U.K. outside London. World Museum Liverpool is itself one of the oldest and largest museums in Liverpool. It first opened 1853 in the Ropewalks district, built for merchants and workers in the seafaring trade, and moved to its present site on William Brown Street, a concentration of grand civic buildings known as the Cultural Quarter, in 1860. The museum’s collections, ranging from Egyptian mummies and Roman artifacts to dinosaurs and meteorites, make it a popular destination for family outings.
