Hammer Museum

Los Angeles, California | United States

Illuminating lives through art and ideas

Founded by the entrepreneur Armand Hammer in 1990, this museum expanded on its initial collection of 19th-century European and American art to become a leading institution for contemporary art and a cornerstone for culture in LA. Its exhibitions often embrace social and political themes and showcase emerging and underrepresented artists. The Hammer is affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and includes the UCLA collections of the Wight Art Gallery and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts. The permanent collection comprises more than 50,000 works, and alongside exhibitions, the museum’s popular lectures, symposia, film screenings and events are a major draw.
