Prestigious homage to the Catalan avant-gardist
Joan Miró’s hilltop museum on the outskirts of Barcelona was founded by the Spanish artist himself as a place to house his work and to act as a center for contemporary art research. Its location — surrounded by trees, greenery and spectacular vistas — is key, with nature having been an important source of inspiration for Miró. The undulating white building was designed by the architect Josep Lluís Sert, a close friend of the artist, and the pair worked together to bring Miró’s vision to life. The permanent collection includes more than 200 of Miró’s paintings, 178 sculptures, some 8,000 drawings and almost all of his prints. A contemporary art collection, assembled as a tribute to Miró and his vision in the year after his death, includes works by artists such as Anthony Caro, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Wifredo Lam, Fernand Léger and three pieces by Alexander Calder. The museum also holds temporary exhibitions of 20th and 21st century artists.
