Verdant ode to the trailblazing modernist

This museum was founded in 1986 to showcase Franz Marc’s life and work within the beautiful landscape setting that influenced him, located an hour outside Munich in Kochel am See. The museum’s permanent collection includes approximately 2,000 artworks by Marc, one of the founding members of the avant-garde art movement Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). The collection also features works by other modernist and post-war artists, offering insight into the artistic movements that followed Marc’s tragic death during World War I. Since its expansion in 2008, the Franz Marc Museum has displayed the artist’s works juxtaposed with examples of his contemporaries, such as Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky.
