Art, nature and architecture in perfect harmony
The Fondation Maeght was established in 1964 and is a jewel among private European art foundations. Set on a hill just outside a medieval village on the French Riviera, the architectural complex was entirely conceived of and financed by art dealers Marguerite and Aimé Maeght to present modern and contemporary art in all its forms. Painters and sculptors collaborated closely with the Catalan architect Lluís Sert to create pieces, many of them monumental in scale, which are integrated into the building and gardens. These include the Giacometti courtyard—among the world’s most famous in-situ works; the Miró labyrinth filled with sculptures and ceramics; mural mosaics by Marc Chagall and Pierre Tal-Coat, and a pool and stained-glass window by Georges Braque. Inside, the museum contains one of the most important modern and contemporary art collections on the continent.
