F ollowing the sale of Tomasso: The More A Thing Is Perfect, Sotheby’s are delighted to be offering a further selection of works of art in Tomasso II, which includes European Sculpture, Old Master Paintings, Furniture and Antiquities and drawings showcasing the exceptional depth and breadth of the collecting interests of Dino and Raffaello Tomasso.
Their combined expertise represents a unique collaboration between two brothers, supported by their colleagues and more recently their extended family.
Auction Highlights
Dino and Raffaello’s love of sculpture is evident throughout the sale, which offers a fabulous group of Florentine bronzes including a cast of Giambologna’s Cesarini Venus and a wonderful horse after a model by Fanelli. There is also an enchanting 18th century terracotta of Christ and St John attributed to Trentanove.
Paintings include a most elegant 19th century panoramic view of sunlit clouds, an impressive portrait of a gentleman in an elaborately embroidered costume dating from the mid-17th century and attributed to the Lombard School along with an enchanting 17th century allegory of love depicting an angel holding a crown of flowers.
Also of note are two elegant, large scale, Grisaille depictions of Mythological scenes from Antiquity, previously belonging to Sir John Richardson. Overall, this varied sale allows us once more to enter the eclectic world curated by two great experts, the content of which illustrates more effectively than words the discerning style of Tomasso.
