Description

Flemish School, 17th Century

An angel holding a crown of flowers (an Allegory of Love?)

oil on canvas

unframed: 115.9 x 75 cm.; 45⅝ x 29½ in.

framed: 143 x 102.8 cm.; 56⅜ x 40½ in.

Whilst the colouring, handling and overt sensuality of this painting suggest a Flemish artist, certain elements, such as the crown of flowers, show the influence of Italy. It therefore seems likely that this enticing allegorical figure was painted by a Flemish hand working in Italy, of which there were many during this period, including artists such as Jan Miel that were referred to as the 'Bamboccianti'. In style and subject matter, the composition can be compared with the allegorical youth by Giovanni di Filippo del Campo which sold at Christie's, New York, 30 October 2018, lot 70, for $432,500.1
