S otheby’s is pleased to present The Whimsical World of François-Xavier Lalanne, an online sale featuring a wide array of prints by the celebrated French sculptor and installation artist, open for bidding until 16 November at 2pm EDT.
Known widely for his whimsical sculptures and pieces of furniture, Lalanne turned to the animal kingdom for inspiration, imbuing his work with a touch of humor or surrealist charm. His prints are no exception, offering another window into the works of his imaginative mind that combined natural forms, sweeping landscapes and man made creations. The sale presents a unique opportunity to acquire the artist’s graphic work. In addition to his prints, the sale includes the monumental Serpent (lot 10) oil on canvas in five parts, Paysage de St Rémy de Provence (lot 11), an early oil painting on panel created during a period when Lalanne was painting exclusively, and Homme à dos d’âne (lot 13), an ink drawing framed by François-Xavier as a present to his friend Baron Alexis de Rédé after a stay in Marrakech.
