The Backbeat of America: Historic Musical Instruments and Memorabilia
Selling Exhibition • 1 July–16 August • New York

W hen rock and roll burst onto the American scene in the 1950s, many naysayers dismissed it as merely a fad. But the baby boom generation seized on this new popular music and didn't let go. More than just a musical sensation, rock and roll was a social and generational phenomenon that exploded into one of the most important artistic movements of the 20th century. Its seismic influence reverberated across society, affecting fashion, youth culture, dance, sexuality, and free speech. It became a way of life. The musical instruments, manuscripts, and other material included herein exemplify extraordinary artistry, design, and freedom that made rock and roll one of the nation’s greatest exports.
