Sotheby’s Impact Gala 2022: Auctions in Support of Instituto Terra

T his fall, Sotheby’s is pleased to present a series of exhibitions, events, and auctions to benefit Instituto Terra, the nonprofit environmental organization co-founded by acclaimed photographer Sebastião Salgado and Lélia Wanick Salgado. The auctions will take place both in person at the Sotheby’s Impact Gala, on Wednesday, September 28 at 8:30pm ET, and online in Sotheby’s Contemporary Discoveries. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these lots will be donated to Instituto Terra to ensure the organization can continue its work planting millions of trees in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest and educating farmers, public officials and local communities about the importance of protecting this delicate ecosystem.

Lots range from under $5,000 to over $100,000 and include painting, photographs, editions, and priceless once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Works will be on view at Sotheby’s New York September 26 – October 3.

Studio Visit with Artist David Hockney in Normandy

An experience for up to two people to spend an afternoon visiting David Hockney in the Pays d'Auge region to the east of Caen, near the village of Beuvron-en-Auge. Accompanied by his recent TASCHEN limited edition publication of 220 for 2020. This Normandy-based experience can be enjoyed by the winning bidder and up to one guest. Mutually agreed upon date to be set by December 1, 2022.

David Hockney (B. 1937) is widely recognized as one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. For more than six decades, Hockney has challenged and transformed the conventions of picture-making. Championed for his relentless exploration of artistic media, Hockney has experimented with painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and more recently computer and iPad drawing.

Major retrospectives devoted to David Hockney have been staged at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Tate Britain (London); the Centre Pompidou (Paris); the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York); and the National Portrait Gallery (London). His work is collected the world over, including notable holdings by the Hayward Gallery: Arts Council Collection (London); The Museum of Modern Art (New York); and the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis).

David Hockney: The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020, an exhibition of 116 works organized by the Royal Academy of Arts (London), is currently at the Art Institute of Chicago through January 2023. David Hockney: A Year in Normandie will be on view at Bayeux Museum (Bayeux, Normandy) from September 2022 through April 2023.

Portrait Sitting with Photographer Annie Leibovitz

An experience for up to two people to spend an afternoon sitting for a unique portrait commission by photographer Annie Leibovitz. Accompanied by her TASCHEN limited edition SUMO publication Annie Leibovitz. This New York-based experience can be enjoyed by the winning bidder and up to one guest. Mutually agreed upon date to be set by December 1, 2022.

Annie Leibovitz (B. 1949) is one of America’s most highly respected living photographers. In 1973, She was the first woman appointed chief photographer for Rolling Stone, shooting more than 140 iconic covers over a decade with the magazine. She joined the staff at Vanity Fair in 1983 and began working regularly for Vogue in 1998. She has been making memorable portraits for more than fifty years: John Lennon and Yoko Ono on the day Lennon was murdered; Whoopi Goldberg submerged in a bathtub of milk; a blue-jeaned Bruce Springsteen against a backdrop of the American flag; a naked and body-painted Keith Haring; Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace; and R2-D2 in his shipping crate. Working extensively in both color and black and white, Leibovitz is known for using bold tones and inventive staging to achieve intimate portraits of her familiar subjects.

Leibovitz has been designated a Living Legend by the Library of Congress and is the recipient of many other honors, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Center of Photography. Since her first solo show at the Sidney Janis Gallery in New York in 1983, Leibovitz has exhibited widely including at the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D. C.); the International Center of Photography (New York); the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam); the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris); the National Portrait Gallery (London); and the Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia). Major retrospectives were organized in 2007 by the Brooklyn Museum (New York) and in 2017 at the LUMA Foundation (Arles).
