USA vs World

“Basketball is now a global sport… anybody can play. You need a hoop and a basket, so in that way it’s a lot like soccer.”
Former President Barack Obama at the 2026 NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles, reflecting on the sport’s worldwide appeal during the event

After several years of experimenting with alternative formats for their midseason showcase, the NBA introduced a new structure for the 2026 All-Star Game, featuring three teams in a round-robin tournament: two teams of American players (Team Stars and Team Stripes) and one team composed of international stars, known as Team World. The change was influenced by the league’s international growth and the timing of the event, which coincided with Winter Olympics coverage on NBC, giving the game a broader global platform and underscoring the sport’s worldwide appeal.

“I think all of those factors… present an enormous opportunity for us to do something with an international competition instead of the traditional All-Star formats.”
Adam Silver on staging and innovating the All-Star Game in Los Angeles.

Uniforms

Inspired by Los Angeles and the debut of the USA vs. World format, the 2026 NBA All-Star uniforms honor the city’s deep-rooted basketball tradition while reflecting the game’s expanding international presence. Each jersey features an LA-inspired script across the chest, along with seven stars representing the seven times the city has hosted the All-Star Game. According to the NBA, the USA teams’ uniforms “uniquely celebrate the design of the American flag, emphasizing the stars and stripes in a red, white, and blue color palette,” while “the World All-Star team will wear a white uniform with blue and green paneling along the right side, representing the vastness of land and sea across the globe.” Each uniform also features the player’s country flag on the back neckline.

Round Robin

Team Stars (37) vs. Team World (35)

Each game of the round-robin series was decided by a single possession, highlighting just how competitive the matchups were. In Game 1, Victor Wembanyama led the way for Team World, finishing with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Anthony Edwards nearly matched him, scoring 13 points — including the game-tying three-pointer with under 30 seconds remaining. Team Stars rallied in overtime to claim the first game, 37‑35.

Team Stripes (42) vs. Team Stars (40)

This game was a heavyweight battle, pitting some of the greatest players in NBA history against the league’s rising stars. They traded blows throughout, and the final two minutes delivered everything fans could have hoped for. After LeBron James sank a three-pointer from the logo, Anthony Edwards scored five points in just 12 seconds to give his team a one-point lead. However, Team Stripes sealed the win at the buzzer when De’Aaron Fox hit a clutch three as time expired.

Team Stripes (48) vs. Team World (45)

Game 3 featured a scoring duel between Kawhi Leonard and Victor Wembanyama, with the two stars trading baskets throughout. Kawhi got into rhythm from the opening possession, finishing with 31 points in just 12 minutes, including a stretch of 15 consecutive points. Wemby did everything he could to keep pace for Team World, posting a team-high 19 points. Despite his efforts, it wasn’t enough, as Team Stripes secured the victory and advanced to the championship game.

Championship

Team Stars (47) vs. Team Stripes (21)

Team Stars relied on balanced scoring and stout defense to prevail in the championship over Team Stripes. The team shot 61% from the field and 40% from three-point range, paced by Tyrese Maxey, Anthony Edwards, and Chet Holmgren. In the end, both players and fans applauded the league’s efforts to reignite the excitement and competitive spirit of the All-Star Game.

“The format therefore led to increased pressure, which led to enhanced intensity. That’s because the margin for error was squeezed. Teams couldn’t afford lapses, or else. Almost every possession counted. No room to snooze, or lose.”

Despite going 0‑2 in round-robin play, Victor Wembanyama was widely credited with elevating the competitiveness of the games. As Anthony Edwards put it afterward: “It was Wemby. He created this.”
