Modern Discoveries 13–19 October 2022 • 2:00 PM BST • London

S otheby’s is delighted to present the October Modern Discoveries sale, a carefully curated sale bringing together works that span a breadth of art historical movements across the 19th and 20th centuries.

This October we are excited to be presenting an insight into the collections of several important private individuals, offering an elegant selection of works by Pablo Picasso, some of which come from the collection of Marina Picasso and some from the family of Carl Nesjar. Joining this selection is an intimate group of three works on paper by Paul Gauguin that have been in the same family since they were acquired from Pola Gauguin in the 1920s, each of these three drawings are offered with an estimate under £20,000.

Further notable highlights of the sale include a wonderfully playful Picasso ceramic from 1956, an exquisite Foujita oil and a Marquet painted during the artist’s time in Sidi Bou Saïd in northern Tunisia, in addition to a number of beautifully executed works on paper by major figures in modern art such as Camille Pissarro, Max Liebermann, Henri Matisse and influential figures of the surrealist movement: Leonor Fini and Leonora Carrington.
