A black lace hat with silver polka dots that was previously owned by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Freddie+Mercury&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Freddie Mercury</a>.&nbsp;<ul><li>designed by Diana Moseley.</li><li>Commissioned for Freddie Mercury's Very Silly Hat Party, 1986.</li></ul> The hat was designed by Diana Moseley for Freddie’s ‘Very Silly Hat’ party that took place at his Garden Lodge home on his 40th&nbsp;birthday. Diana Moseley, in an interview with Sotheby’s, June 2023, recalled making the hats for this occasion:&nbsp;&nbsp;"Freddie&nbsp;had a huge sense of humor. I remember making all the hats for his 40th birthday party in 1986, each one specifically designed for a member of the family or one of his friends, like Mary, Jim, Joe,&nbsp;Peter&nbsp;and some actor friends. There were joke ones and a trick one for Freddie which nearly broke his jaw because it had an exploding device in it. He found it hilarious. When I arrived at the house with them, it was like giving out Christmas presents. The day before, they had all been bouncing around the house setting up the party, putting hatstands in the garden, as if for the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. It was a curious sight, but so much fun.”&nbsp;The ‘exploding device’ referred to by Moseley is the mechanism inside the ‘<a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2023/freddie-mercury-a-world-of-his-own-crazy-little-things-2/freddie-mercurys-mad-hatter-top-hat-and-other-hats" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mad Hatter’ top hat</a> which made the top flip open to reveal the ‘surprise bang’.

An uncut printers proof for a proposed Queen Radio Ga Ga 1980s Christmas card, <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/collectibles?query=signed&amp;locale=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">signed</a> on the front by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Freddie+Mercury&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Freddie Mercury</a> in blue pen, and a 1980s Freddie Mercury Christmas Card.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 2.</li><li>Each is presented unframed.</li></ul> The artwork on the front of the card features an image of Queen taken during the video shoot for Radio Ga Ga; this was also the image that was originally going to be used on the 7 inch single sleeve but it was withdrawn.&nbsp; It is said that a number of these proofs were signed by Freddie Mercury in Germany in the mid-1980s prior to Christmas and they were then sent back to London where they were intended to be made into Christmas cards. However, this project never materialized and the proofs remained in Freddie’s home, Garden Lodge, for over 35 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;Also included is a 1980s day glow pink Christmas card that features a black and white image of Freddie Mercury on the front taken during a photo shoot for Vogue magazine. The text printed inside the card humorously reads ‘Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Preening, Pouting, Posturing, Posing Old Tart’. The card was specially commissioned by Freddie Mercury to send to friends.

A handbill for the Eric Burdon and the Animals performance at the Speakeasy Club, London, England, <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/collectibles?query=signed&amp;locale=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">autographed</a> boldly on the front by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=John+Lennon&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">John Lennon</a> in blue ballpoint pen.<ul><li>Sold as a set of of 5: 1 autographed handbill, and 4 supporting documents.</li><li>The autograph was obtained at the club by an American tourist in the early hours of the morning on the 9th August 1967.&nbsp;</li><li>Accompanied by a collection of supporting material detailing how the autograph was obtained, listed below, and a letter from a relative of the original recipient.&nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;Accompanying Documents: (1) The original recipient’s Speakeasy Club membership card autographed by Eric Burdon:<ul><li>Eric has written ‘Eric Burdon the animals Love.’.</li><li>This signature was obtained on the evening of the 10th August 1967 when Eric Burdon and the Animals performed at the club.&nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;(2) A list of London addresses written by the recipient, one of which is the Speakeasy Club.&nbsp;&nbsp;(3) The recipient’s diary which records his time in London, including obtaining John’s signature.<ul><li>Extracts are detailed below:</li><li>Sunday 6th August 1967 – ‘Went to the pub on King’s Rd./ Talked to a few girls. Then went to the “Bag-O-Nails”, a club where the Stones and Beatles go’&nbsp;</li><li>Monday 7th August 1967 – ‘Next went to the Speakeasy. Need a passport to get in as a guest.’&nbsp;</li><li>Tuesday 8th August 1967 – ‘BEFORE I write – anything I must say that I met (talked to) John Lennon of The Beatles! It happened in the morning (actually – to be technical – on August 9th at 3.15 at the Speakeasy Club. I got his autograph and talked to him. He signed his name with this very pen I’m writing this with. He was very sharp and witty. For example, I said “Hey John, I know you don’t like to sign be bothered signing autographs…” And before I had a chance to finish he said, “How do you know?” I said “Well, ah – ah – I guess I don’t really know but I just assumed that”. Then I told him I didn’t normally collect autographs, but there were only four people whose autographs I would ever want and that is: The Beatles. Then he said something in return but I didn’t quite understand him. He said something about “You mean you wouldn’t want Kruschev’s (sic) or Johnson’s autograph?” Thinking he said that, I said, “No No, I just want The Beatles autographs”. Then I asked him if The Beatles were going to change their name to Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band. He once again gave me a witty answer and said “What do you mean? What’s wrong with having two names? Will you accept us if we use the name “Beatles” on one side of a record and “Sergeant Pepper” on the other side?” Again I had to admit he was right. What’s wrong with two names? Why should you conform and have only one name? Then, finally, I asked “Oh? Do you mean that your next album will use both names?” He said “Maybe, that’s and idea” He walked out of the John (bathroom) and as he left I said “Thanks John” He said “It’s all right” I still don’t believe it happened. Before this I went to the “Wetherbee Inn” and “The Ship” nothing half as interesting happened.&nbsp;</li><li>Sammy Davis Jr. was also at The Speakeasy. I also met a guy named Mark who I talked to most of the night. There weren’t many girls at all.&nbsp;</li><li>John Lennon was at a table with Eric Burdon and the Animals who are playing at the Speakeasy on Thursday nite. I hope to see them.’&nbsp;</li><li>Thursday 10th August 1967 – Went to Speakeasy. Saw Eric Burdon and the Animals. Psychedelic Sound. Got Eric’s autograph. Also met a girl who said she wrote for an American newspaper about pop music. Associated with WPOP in Hartford. Name Debbie Smith She seemed to like me. The New Animals did not impress me. They were just a lot of noise. Eric’s singing was fair.’&nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;(4) A letter from the cousin of the original recipient that reads:<ul><li>‘Enclosed please find the autographs of John Lennon and Eric Burdon from August of 1967. I have also included my cousin's (Tom Tondo) diary from his trip to England. I have tabbed the page that referenced him getting Mr. Lennon's signature. You will also find additional memorabilia he had from that trip such as his personal notes, a club card and transit map.’.&nbsp;</li></ul>

Einstein</a>."), to Carl Laubman, about the virtues of travel, 1927.<ul><li>1 page in ink on a single sheet, in German.</li><li>Mounted in wood display frame with Albert Einstein plaque affixed to front.</li><li>Typed note, presumably by Carl Laubman, affixed to verso.</li></ul> One of the consequences of Einstein's general theory of relativity is that light should appear "bent" when passing by a massive celestial body on account of its gravitational pull. British physicist Arthur Eddington (1882-1944) proved Einstein's prediction correct in 1919, when he observed and recorded the shifted positions of stars whose light passed by the Sun during a total solar eclipse. Concerns were quickly raised, however, about the accuracy of Eddington's photographic plates. Therefore, the physics and astronomy community deemed the reconfirmation of his findings necessary. In September 1922, many national and international teams spread out across Australia to photograph a total solar eclipse that passed over the entire width of the country. The best remembered effort was that of William Wallace Campbell, the Director of California's famed Lick Observatory, who set up camp at Warral, Western Australia. However, many other groups set up their equipment across the path of the eclipse, including at Cordillo Downs in the northeast corner of the State of South Australia. Led by George Dodwell, the Government Astronomer for South Australia for much of the first half of the 20th century, the Cordillo Downs expedition also confirmed Einstein’s theory and Eddington’s observation. In 1927, Carl Laubman and Harold Pank, prominent South Australians and the owners of the well-known optical firm Laubman &amp; Pank, went on a 12-month world tour as official representatives of the South Australian Government where they were to “enquire into and report upon the tests for visual acuity of drivers of public utility vehicles, ophthalmic standards, and lighting of industrial buildings in Great Britain, Europe and the United States.” During their tour – which included Palestine, Egypt, and Turkey in addition to Europe and North America – Laubman and Pank met with Einstein in Berlin where they provided him with the data from the Cordillo Downs expedition that confirmed his theory of general relativity.&nbsp; In the years leading up to Laubman and Pank's visit, Einstein had taken numerous journeys around the world: to the United States in 1921, Asia and the Near East in 1922, and South America in 1925. Perhaps inspired by Laubman and Pank's more recent experiences in Palestine (where Einstein was lauded only a few years prior), Einstein gave Laubman this "inspiration," in German, as a parting gift: "Traveling gives you a clear view into the unique characteristics of your familiar surroundings."
