American Landscapes

Robert Emmitt Owen (American, 1878-1957)This work is offered in a carved giltwood frame Owen, a noted Impressionist landscapist, was born in North Adams, Massachusetts. He studied at the Eric Pape Art School (Boston), Art Students League of New York, National Academy of Design School and the New York School of Art. His education included instruction under noted Impressionists Frederick Mulhaupt and Leonard Ochtman. His later style was particularly influenced by noted American Impressionists Willard Metcalf, J. Alden Weir, and Childe Hassam. Before his New York studies, he was already established as an illustrator, selling illustrations to the Boston Globe, National Magazine, and Brown Brook Magazine. Later, his illustrations would appear in Scribner’s Magazine, and Harper’s Monthly. It was only after he moved to New York City in 1901 to further his art training that he was exposed to and enamored of the Impressionist manner of painting. Owen traded in the tight precision drafting style that characterized his illustrations, for a style executed with loose, vigorous brush strokes, using a vivid palette. In 1910, he moved to Bagnall, Connecticut to concentrate on painting New England landscapes. Owen’s landscapes of the New England countryside have been likened to the poetry of Robert Frost, as both realistically depicted scenes of rural American life. In 1919, he was commissioned by Temple Gwathmey, former president of the New York Stock Exchange, to paint a series of 20 paintings. In 1923, he was commissioned by Stephen H.P. Pell, founder of the Fort Ticonderoga Museum for another series of images. Later commissions included those for Edward Stettinus,Jr., former U.S. Secretary of State and Percy Rockefeller. In 1920 Owen, moved back to New York City and opened the Robert Emmett Owen Landscape Gallery, where he exhibited and sold his own work. The business operated until America’s involvement of World War II, after which, he closed the gallery. Owen moved to New Rochelle, NY and became the artist in residence at the Thomas Paine Memorial Museum. Owen exhibited widely, including at the former Corcoran Gallery of Fine Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago, among many others.

William Henry Ahrendt (American, b. 1933) William Harry Ahrendt is a contemporary painter known for his historical figures-genre paintings. He first studied art at the Cleveland Museum of Art. He became interested in landscape when his family moved to Arizona .to care for his grandmother. His art studies continued when he returned to Cleveland and attended the Cleveland Institute of Art. At that time, the Abstraction movement was underway, a style that Ahrendt found unappealing. He left the United States for eleven years to tour Europe, living primarily in Germany, where he attended the Munich Academy of Creative Arts. There he studied the painting techniques of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, techniques that he applies to his own work.After returning to the United States, he worked as a commercial artist in California, before being appointed Chair of the Glendale Community College Art Department (Arizona). For many years he contributed many paintings and drawings to “Arizona Highways Magazine”; however, in 1979, Ahrendt retired to the Pine Mountains, where he and his wife had built a home and studio, to concentrate on art. The original “Zoroaster Temple at Sunset, Thomas Moran, 1916“ painting is part of the Phoenix Art Museum collection.

The Grand Canyon

Henry Collins Bispham (American, 1841-1882) Bispham was a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania artist known for hunting and fishing genre and wildlife paintings. He studied under noted Philadelphia landscape and marine artist, William Trost Richards and later in Paris under genre and landscape painter, Otto Weber. Nineteenth- century New York art critic Theodore Tuckerman said of his work, “his excellent pictures of animals in landscapes are delineated with great authenticity and feeling”. Bispham exhibited at the Boston Art Club, National Academy of Design, Brooklyn Art Association, Philadelphia Sketch Club, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

John Francis Murphy (American, 1853–1921).This work is offered in a beveled giltwood frame. Known for his Tonalist-style landscape paintings, John Francis Murphy was referred to as the “American Corot” because of his similarity to the painting style of Camille Corot (1796–1875), one of the original Barbizon painters in France. Murphy was born on December 11, 1853 in Oswego, New York.&nbsp;Completely self-taught, he kept his studio for many years in New York City.&nbsp;His work was first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1876, where he was inducted eleven years later. He won numerous prizes, medals and honors for his landscape paintings, which are said to rank with those of George Inness, Alexander Wyant and Homer Martin. Although his world was a limited one, his landscapes captured the forms of nature and the subtle nuances of the scene.

Sunrise on Lake George New York

Arthur Parton (American, 1842–1914).This work is sold in a 19th century-style fluted cove frame. Known as a Hudson River School painter, especially of mountain landscapes, Arthur Parton was well-established in the New York art world where he exhibited at the National Academy of Design for more than half a century.&nbsp;He was born in Hudson, New York to a religious family supported by a cabinetmaker father.&nbsp;He enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as a student of William Trost Richards, who remained a strong influence, and in 1862, his first exhibitions were in Philadelphia. In 1864, he moved to New York City where he exhibited regularly with the National Academy of Design, excepting 1869 when he spent a year in Europe and was influenced by the Barbizon style of painting.In 1874, he and his wife moved into the Tenth Street Building in New York City, and he kept his studio there until 1893.&nbsp;In 1876, he gained much national notoriety at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition for his painting "November, Loch Lomond and Solitude." He spent summers painting in the Adirondacks and Catskill Mountains and also in England and Scotland as indicated by his entry at the Philadelphia Exposition. During his career, he explored several styles including Tonalism and Impressionism, but seemed to remain most closely influenced by the Hudson River style including Luminism.

Harry McChesney (American 1924-2012)This work is offered in a giltwood frame. Harry McChesney was a gifted painter, who was probably best known as a Diorama painter for the New York State Museum, Albany, New York.&nbsp;Harry specialized in plein air landscapes, often executed in the environs near his home in Westerlo, as well as the Catskill Mountains, although he painted subjects as far ranging as Tybee Island, Georgia and Rockport, Mass. A native of Neptune, New Jersey, Harry was born in 1924.&nbsp;Harry graduated from Pratt Institute of Arts in Brooklyn, New York where he received the Society of Illustrators medal for Achievement in Illustration.&nbsp;Following his graduation, he continued his studies at Pratt Institute Evening School, where he studied with Walter Klett and Edgar A. Whitney, the latter with whom he studied watercolor painting.&nbsp;Further studies continued in New York City with Frank Reilly. Harry McChesney's works reflects the eye of an artist who loved the outdoors.&nbsp;His landscapes reflect the softness of his subjects, regardless of the time of year.&nbsp;Harry insisted on painting directly from nature, and as such, his work captured subtle moods found only in nature.
