Trained in the studio of Léon Bonnat—whose influence is clearly evident in this work—Léon Tirode was born in Besançon, a city to which he remained loyal throughout his life, eventually becoming a professor and then director at the city’s École des Beaux-Arts toward the end of his career.

Dating from the early part of his career, this imposing nude, titled “After the Bath,” was exhibited by the artist at the 1898 Salon, under number 1966.
