Originally from Montauban, Jean Valette-Falgores, known as Valette-Penot, studied at the Académie in Toulouse with Antoine Rivalz. His particular speciality was the painting of trompe-l’œil, sometimes depicting shelves laden with bottles and fruits, sometimes boards pinned with a selection of everyday objects. Here, Valette-Penot has chosen to show an engraving under broken glass, representing the Crucifixion by François Girardon. This image was the subject of prints that were principally produced by Nicolas Jean-Baptiste de Poilly and Georg Friedrich Schmidt in the mid-eighteenth century.
