We are grateful to Mr Dominique Brême for having confirmed the authenticity of the work after first-hand inspection. It will be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist, as an early work.
Nicolas de Largillierre studied in Antwerp and continued his training in London, in the studio of the portrait painter Sir Peter Lely. He returned to settle in France, the country of his birth, in the early 1680s. While the works of his youth still show signs of his Dutch and English training, they also demonstrate Largillierre’s willingness to assimilate the French classicism that was fashionable at the time.
This portrait of a lady is a fine example and a fortuitous addition to the currently very small corpus of works assigned to the artist’s youth. Dominique Brême compares the present painting to The Stoppa Family (Musée de l’Hôtel-Dieu, Château-Thierry), dated to about 1685, to support its attribution.
