Inspired by Jean-Marc Nattier’s majestic painting portraying Anne-Henriette de France playing the cello (oil on canvas, 249 x 184.2 cm; Château de Versailles, inv. 3800), the present painting only reproduces the young princess’s bust. The original composition, begun in 1748, was only completed in 1754, after the model’s death. It was exhibited at the Salon the following year, where it met with resounding success. There are many known replicas by Nattier, his workshop and his circle, some with variations, a number of which are also in the Château de Versailles (see for example inv. MV 4455).
In the present painting, the artist has given Madame Henriette a heavy cloak embroidered with fleurs-de-lys and edged with ermine, emphasizing her royal status.
