Going Deeper | David Robinson
David Robinson is widely regarded as one of the greatest centers in NBA history and one of the foundational figures in the history of the San Antonio Spurs franchise. Nicknamed “The Admiral” due to his service at the United States Naval Academy, Robinson was selected first overall in the 1987 NBA Draft and joined the Spurs in 1989 after fulfilling his military commitment.
Robinson made an immediate impact, winning NBA Rookie of the Year and helping transform San Antonio into a perennial contender. Over a 14-year career, he was a 10-time All-Star, the 1995 NBA Most Valuable Player, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and a member of the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Known for his rare combination of size, athleticism, and defensive prowess, Robinson led the league in scoring in 1994 and remains one of only a handful of players to record a quadruple-double.
Robinson capped his career by helping lead the Spurs to two NBA championships in 1999 and 2003. His impact on the franchise extended beyond his individual accomplishments, as he helped establish the culture of excellence that would define the Spurs for decades.
