Description
the scrolled arms carved with foliage and supported on four fluted tapering legs, with a later pink striped upholstery
The imaginative and crisply carved design of this pair of armchairs recalls Lombard craftsmanship, featuring distinctive neoclassical motifs and a green‑and‑white painted surface meant to magnify the design from afar. Key characteristics include:
- the fluted feet headed by a guilloche frieze, with almost identical ones seen on a set of painted chairs sold at Sotheby's, London, 10 June 1999, lot 186 (illustrated in Enrico Colle, Il Mobile neoclassico in Italia, 2005, p.360);
-the scrolling arm resting on a curved support, as seen on a sofa after a design by Giocondo Albertolli and from the collection of Conte Francesco Castelbarco Albani in Milan (see Clelia Alberici, Il Mobile Lombardo, 1969, p.216) and another sofa from the last quarter of the 18th century (Enrico Colle, op. cit., p.354);
- the frieze of overlapping quatrefoils to the seat rail and backrest, as seen on a console table at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan (Alberici, op. cit., p.205).
