The present bureau plat is a compelling example of the enduring legacy of the great names of the Louis XVI ébénisterie, namely the work of Martin Carlin, here evidenced by Carlin’s characteristic drawer form with its softly undulating foliate lower edge, but it is also adorned with mounts that recur throughout his oeuvre.
The foliate escutcheon, framed on either side by scrolling foliage that borders the lower contour of the drawer, appears on several documented pieces by Carlin, including the secrétaire à abattant from the collection of the princesse de La Tour d’Auvergne (1885–1860) at the Musée du Louvre (inv. OA11176), a table à écrire from the Widener Collection at the National Gallery of Art, Washington (inv. 1942.9.425), and another table à écrire originally made for Madame du Barry, now in the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon (inv. 2267).
