Massive Mojave Desert Fulgurite — "Lightning Preserved in Glass"
Mojave Desert, California, USA
24 x 25¼ x 3 inches (61 x 64.1 x 7.6 cm), 25 inches (63.5 cm) tall on custom metal base.
A MASSIVE FULGURITE FROM THE MOJAVE DESERT, ONE OF THE LARGEST FULGURITES EVER OFFERED AT AUCTION
Fulgurites are created when lightning strikes silica-rich sand or soil with sufficient force to fuse and vitrify the surrounding ground in an instant. Formed in a moment of immense and instantaneous energy release, they are the direct physical trace of one of nature’s most violent and ephemeral phenomena.
The present example is exceptional not only for its remarkable state of preservation, but for its extraordinary scale and aesthetics. Measuring 24 inches in height and more than 25 inches in width, it is one of the largest fulgurites ever offered at auction. Its dramatic bifurcated silhouette, rising in two sweeping arms from a thick central trunk, gives the piece a tree-like appearance, while the highly textured surface preserves the raw and elemental force of its formation.
Fulgurites are typically encountered as comparatively small and often fragile tubular formations, many lacking the complex sculptural quality of this piece. The surprising size, balance, and natural surface of the piece lend it the appearance of a monumental abstract sculpture, positioned somewhere between natural specimen and work of art.
Created in an instant yet preserved across time, this specimen stands as an extraordinary record of atmospheric violence transformed into matter, and as one of the most desirable fulgurites ever to appear on the market.
