Description

Moldavite — Formed Nearly 15 Million Years Ago From the Strike That Created Germany's Nördlinger Ries Crater

Tektite

42 x 34 x 16 mm (1⅝ x 1⅜ x ⅝ inches). 19.6 grams (98 carats).

Moldavites are a type of tektite, or impact glass, found in the Czech Republic and named after the town of Moldautein (Czech: Týn nad Vltavou) where these pieces were first discovered. Formed approximately 14.8 million years ago by the same meteoroid impact that produced the Nördlinger Ries crater in Bavaria, moldavites formed from debris flung high into the atmosphere, where it melted, cooled, and then solidified into glass on its trip back to Earth.

In addition to this lot from the Central European Strewn Field, we are offering two tektites from the Australasian Strewn Field (see Lots 164 & 167) as well as one from the Ivory Coast Strewn Field (see Lot 165).
