This delightful sheet, full of minute detail yet whimsical in its own way, depicts some of the modest cottages that Stanley Spencer would have grown up surrounded by in his home village of Cookham. The drawing can be dated on stylistic grounds to circa 1907-9, prior to the young artist’s admission to the Slade School of Fine Art and can be compared to other examples from this early period in his career, similarly drawn in pen and black ink.1
