Alexandre Calame was born in 1810 close to the village (now town) of Vevey, on Lake Geneva. The son of a sculptor, he was apprenticed to the landscape painter François Diday (1802–1877) and began exhibiting in Paris and Berlin from 1835. He enjoyed success and was particularly admired for his alpine landscapes. In 1844 he traveled to Italy where he spent time in Rome and Naples before returning to his native Switzerland.
