Patek Philippe’s reference 565 is widely regarded as one of the most iconic time-only wristwatches of the 1940s to bear the name of the prestigious Geneva manufacture. Introduced in 1938, the model combined elegant design with forward-thinking functionality, becoming the brand’s first large, waterproof Calatrava, a robust counterpart to the classic reference 96. Distinguished by its screw-down caseback and soft iron dust cover, the reference 565 offered enhanced protection against both moisture and magnetic fields. This focus on water resistance was particularly forward-thinking, as the industrial production of waterproof watch cases remained in its infancy in the late 1930s. In this respect, the model embodies a distinctly pioneering chapter in Patek Philippe’s design and engineering philosophy.
Examples featuring Breguet numerals are among the rarest and most sought-after, and even more exceptional are those bearing a double signature from Tiffany & Co. Only one other Breguet Tiffany dial is known; however, the present example is unique in that the Tiffany & Co. signature appears above the Patek Philippe name. Fresh to the auction market from the family of its original owner, it stands as one of the most remarkable examples of the reference to surface and has been preserved in exceptional overall condition.
The watch was originally purchased at Tiffany & Co. in New York by the consignor’s mother, who presented it to her husband as a wedding gift. The case retains strong proportions, and the movement is stamped with the import mark “PXP.” An inventory number, “208,” is engraved behind the upper left lug. This rare and stunning piece embodies all the qualities sought after by the modern collector.
