Patek Philippe

A distinctive and highly appealing expression of Patek Philippe’s mid-century design language, the present reference 1491 is an example of the manufacture’s willingness to experiment within the Calatrava aesthetic. Characterized by its elegant proportions and signature scroll lugs, giving rise to the Italian nickname “Ricciolo,” meaning “curl,” the model reflects a subtle departure from the restraint typically associated with Patek Philippe’s production of the period.

Adding further depth to its appeal, the case of the reference 1491 was manufactured by the celebrated Geneva casemaker François Markowski, identifiable by the Geneva Key Number 8 maker’s mark within the caseback. Markowski is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished casemakers of the period, responsible for some of Patek Philippe’s most distinctive and collectible designs. Among these are the celebrated reference 1450 “Top Hat,” with its dramatically flared form, as well as the avant-garde creations of Gilbert Albert, including the highly sought-after reference 3424. Markowski’s work is characterized by its technical precision and ability to translate complex, sculptural designs into wearable forms, qualities that are fully evident in the gracefully executed scroll lugs of the present example.

The present watch is further distinguished by its exceptionally rare and attractive “pink on pink” configuration, with a pink gold case paired harmoniously with a matching pink dial, confirmed by the Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives. Such monochromatic compositions are particularly prized for their warmth and cohesion. Of special note are the elongated Arabic numerals, executed in raised hard enamel, an uncommon and technically demanding feature that lends both depth and clarity to the dial. The interplay between these sculptural numerals and the softly toned surface creates a rich and sophisticated aesthetic.
