The Patek Philippe reference 5101 is a highly complicated timepiece that embodies the discreetness and understatement so characteristic of Patek Philippe. Affectionately known as the “Marathon Runner” for its exceptional 10-day power reserve, it was introduced in 2003, with approximately 500 examples produced in platinum. Its striking triple stepped case flanks recall the firm’s celebrated Art Deco designs of the 1920s and 1930s, while the curved case and convex sapphire crystal ensure exceptional comfort on the wrist.

The reference is powered by the manufacture calibre 28-20/222, combining two rare complications within a remarkably compact form. The impressive 10-day power reserve, indicated via a linear display on the dial, is driven by twin mainspring barrels requiring around 100 turns of the crown, with a protection system preventing overtightening.

The second complication, a one minute tourbillon composed of 72 components and weighing just 0.3 grams, is deliberately hidden on the dial side in keeping with Patek Philippe’s philosophy of preserving precision by shielding it from light and shocks. It is instead revealed through the sapphire case back, where the refined finishing of the movement can be fully appreciated.

A rare blend of technical mastery, architectural design, and understated elegance, the reference 5101 stands as one of the most distinctive modern creations from Patek Philippe.
