One of the great advantages of the purse watch was its versatility: it could function not only as a traditional pocket watch but also as a travel timepiece, serving as a compact clock for a desk or bedside table. This Cartier easel-form purse watch perfectly combines elegance with practicality. It features a traditional pendant and bow, allowing it to be attached to a chain, while a sprung hinged strut stand at the back folds out to transform the watch into a freestanding clock. The dial is large and highly legible, yet the case remains sleek and refined, with an impressive depth of just 5mm. Interestingly the octagonal case design with champlevé enamel Roman numerals was also used for a mystery watch, two examples of which are in the Cartier Collection.

François Chaille & Franco Cologni, The Cartier Collection: Timepieces, Paris: Flammarion, 2006. See p. 344 for a cushion-shaped purse watch with strut stand dating to 1925 with luminescent radium numerals. See also pp. 332 & 333 for two mystery watches with similar octagonal cases and champlevé enamel Roman numerals.
