Dial: silvered dial signed Cartier, gilded Arabic and pointed baton hour indexes, gilded epée hands

Calibre: 6¼’’’ rear-wound movement signed LeCoultre Co., grained decoration, lever escapement, 16 jewels, annular balance with poising screws, unadjusted, flat hairspring

Movement number: backplate numbered 76'479 and with U.S. import code LXJ

Case: 14k yellow gold case with, hinged cover with rounded edges, case back secured by two screws, rear-winder with toothed edge, gold ring shank with aperture for edge of winding crown, inside hinged cover and inside movement case back both stamped and with 0.585, Swiss lynx head assay for 14k gold & EJ flag-form 14k stamp, inside case back signed LeCoultre Co. Swiss

Case number: outside case back hand stamped 78'742, ring shank stamped 14k / 0.585, numbered 821, and with Edmond Jaeger punch mark

Documentary evidence suggests that the history of the ring watch stretches back to the 16th century. However, the challenge of producing reliable movements small enough to fit into the diminutive cases required for a ring meant that few examples were made before the 19th century. Among the most notable historical examples are a quarter-repeating ring watch made for King George III by John Arnold in 1764 and a Breguet ring watch with an alarm purchased by Prince Demidoff in 1836. The development of very small yet highly reliable watch movements in the 20th century by watchmakers such as LeCoultre significantly simplified the production of miniature watches. Despite these advancements, ring watches remained a relatively uncommon genre throughout much of the 20th century, cherished by their owners for their novelty and exceptional craftsmanship. This ring watch was supplied directly to Cartier New York from LeCoultre Co. in Switzerland. A similar example made in platinum but without a hinged cover over the dial is known.
