Though Patek Philippe has always been primarily known for their wristwatches, Dome Clocks have been a staple of their back catalogue since 1957. These clocks were all battery powered and featured photo-electric cells, later adapted to quartz in the 1970s and remaining relatively unchanged into the present day. Commonly misunderstood, the value of these creations does not lie in the timekeeping mechanism, though still intricate and impressive. To fully understand the Dome Clock, one must understand first these clocks are unique pieces, each with an extreme level of artistic handwork.

The present Dome Clock is the coveted cloisonné enamel version, with each exterior panel except for the dial and solar panel artistically decorated using the painstaking technique. Cloisonné enamel involves the artist intricately shaping and applying thin strips of gold to a base surface, then applying different colours of enamel within the gold borders, finally firing it to achieve the final product. This technique is famously most commonly found on the dials of World Time wristwatches, at a far smaller scale than the present clock. To create cloisonné enamel at such a large size requires the utmost precision and skill possessed by few, with the present Dome Clock being created by Madame Luca Chappaz, a famed Patek Philippe enameller whose career spanned nearly 40 years, during which over 50 pieces have been attributed to her.

Please note that the clock is circa 1971 and not as stated in the printed catalog.
