Presented as a limited edition at the 2017 Baselworld Fair, the present Reference 5089 showcases a stunning trompe-l’oeil design that captures the traditional art of painted square ceramic tiles common in Portugal and southern Spain. Often linked to the ornamentation of palaces and villas, Azulejos tiles are typically either multicolored or monochrome, with blue being the traditional choice, which is also reflected in the 5089’s dial.

The watch also honors the exceptional craft of Swiss enamelling. Its dial, made of gold, is first coated with contre email, followed by successive layers of blue applied on a white primer. With each layer requiring firing—a process that involves a risk of cracking—approximately twelve firings are needed to complete an Azulejos dial. The meticulous attention to detail is astonishing, with artisans sometimes using brushes with a single hair. The trompe-l’oeil effect impressively mimics the appearance of small tiles, allowing the dial to interact beautifully with light, creating the striking illusion of “mini Azulejos.”
