At Cartier Paris, this design was referred to as the ‘Baignoire’ (bathtub) due to the shape of its case which resembles a roll top bath - in England it was called the ‘Oval’. Launched in 1956, the Baignoire is an iconic Cartier wristwatch design. Famous owners of the Baignoire have included the actor James Garner, the Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein, and the singer Dame Shirley Bassey.

In this London example of the model, the curvaceous form of the case is enhanced by the steep, yet soft inward chamfer of the bezel as it reaches towards the dial. Over the years the model has been predominantly produced with a leather strap, but it has also been available as a bracelet watch in a variety of different styles. This example has a flexible bangle-form bracelet composed of closely woven gold wirework.
