Dial: pink gilded dial signed Cartier, France, blued steel feuilles fortes hands

Calibre: 6¾’’’ circular calibre 242 movement, stamped Fab. Suisse, grained decoration, lever escapement, jewelled to the centre, bi-metallic compensation balance with timing and poising screws, flat hairspring

Case: smoky quartz carved in the form of a tortoise, inset dial to tortoise’s belly with rock crystal cover and pink gold bezel, underside of rock crystal with black enamel painted 5-minute markers, integrated hinged pendant loop to head, smoky quartz winding crown carved in the form of the tortoise’s tail

Cartier’s ingenuity in designing and creating novelty jewellery and watch items is wonderfully illustrated by this tortoise-shaped pendant watch. Carved from smoky quartz, this exquisite piece transforms a functional timepiece into a highly decorative item of jewellery. The belly of the tortoise houses the watch’s dial, which is cleverly inset and protected by a transparent rock crystal cover. This seamless fusion of practicality and artistry underscores Cartier’s ability to blur the boundaries between jewellery and horology. An article from a 1930s magazine features a drawing of what appears to be an identical Cartier tortoise pendant watch, which was offered as a prize in a ladies’ skiing competition.
