Designed by Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. in 1965, the Bird on a Rock brooch ranks among the most recognisable and imaginative jewels of the twentieth century. Its enduring appeal lies in a composition that is at once whimsical and technically sophisticated: a gem-set bird, articulated in textured gold and platinum and often enriched with diamonds and coloured stones, perches atop an exceptional gemstone selected as its base.

Schlumberger, celebrated for his poetic interpretation of the natural world, found inspiration in birds, flowers, sea creatures, and fantastical forms. His Bird on a Rock design exemplifies his ability to combine vivid imagination with the highest standards of craftsmanship. The perched bird creates an intimate dialogue with the central stone, treating it not merely as a rare gem but as an integral element within a small, jewel-like world.

The design became especially associated with the Tiffany Diamond, the legendary 128.54-carat Fancy Yellow diamond acquired by Charles Lewis Tiffany in 1878. When mounted in a Bird on a Rock setting, the celebrated stone gained an entirely new identity: monumental in scale yet softened by the charming, almost spontaneous presence of Schlumberger’s bird. Over the decades, Tiffany & Co. has interpreted the motif with coloured diamonds, aquamarines, tourmalines, amethysts, and other remarkable gemstones, underscoring the versatility of the original concept.

The present brooch, lot 1691, possesses an additional layer of contemporary significance. It was worn by Michael B. Jordan on the red carpet at the 95th Academy Awards on 12 March 2023. Jordan appeared with two Tiffany & Co. Bird on a Rock brooches, bringing Schlumberger’s iconic design to one of the world’s most visible red-carpet occasions. The appearance affirmed the brooch’s continuing relevance as an object of exceptional design, craftsmanship, and style.
