Description
cartouche-shaped, the lid centred with the jewelled cipher of Albrecht I, King of Saxony, above a sapphire cabochon and diamond-set ribbon-tied laurel branch, on jewelled trelliswork overlaid on a sablé ground, the baluster sides engraved with scrollwork and quatrefoil lozenges around floral cartouches, rose gold lining, the left rim numbered: 3779, the right rim with rubbed marks, one probably W in an oval for Weishaupt & Söhne,
in the original crimson velvet presentation case
length 8.4 cm; 3 1/4 in.
Pulls of both the lid and the base of this presentation box, inscribed with the corresponding inventory number '3779' are included in an undated album labelled 'N' in the Hanau archive (Bibliothek der Zeichenakademie Hanau, fig. 1).
It is interesting to note that a presentation snuff box in the Iakobachvili collection, set with a portrait miniature of Friedrich Albrecht, Prince of Prussia (1837-1906), made by Carl Martin Weishaupt Söhne, Hanau, circa 1884-1888, is engraved with the inventory number '3815', and the pulls are also included in the same album with the corresponding number (Haydn Williams, The David and Mikhail Iakobachvili Collection, 19th-Century Snuffboxes, London, 2025, cat no. 383)
