oval, the lid later applied with a domed enamel plaque of an encounter between a classical soldier on horseback wearing a leopard skin and two soldiers and two shepherds in landscape, on a translucent dark blue enamel ground over radiating engine-turning, decorated with gold and steel blue paillon borders, the chased outer borders picked out in green, white and translucent red enamel on a sablé ground, the sides and base similarly decorated, the base with an elaborate floral paillon ornament to centre, partially rubbed maker's mark, later French hibou control marks
